Living in Bristol certainly facilitates my love of trying new places to eat. Whether it's one of the many Asian inspired restaurants such as Wong's or The Thali Cafe, something European like Prego or El Puerto or even amazing barbecue from a GrillStock Smokehouse the problem is not finding somewhere, it is picking which one. This problem is now only being exacerbated by my recently found love of all food Middle Eastern. Considered a cross road between Mediterranean Europe and Asia you can enjoy the best of both worlds and a fantastic place to do this is Bedminster's Souk Kitchen. Located near the top end of North Street this place seems to be consistently satisfying the local crowd.
There are three menu options to choose from; brunch, lunch and dinner, non of which fail to deliver. Whether you are looking for a great local fry up and a Bloody Mary or a richly spiced Shakshouka you wont be disappointed. I tend to go for the latter option, a fantastically tasty combination of tomatoes, peppers, onions, cumin and two whole eggs cooked in one pan and served with a side of homemade flat bread to mop up.
Lunch options include the Souk Skewers, meat cooked over charcoal and served up with light but tasty accompaniments like pilaf, harissa and cabbage slaw. I am always amazed by how much flavour is packed into food from this region, so much more interesting than a sandwich and packet of crisps
The dinner menu is comprehensive with numerous hot and cold mezze dishes for you to share across the table (I would recommend the bistillia) as well as good assortment of mains that will undoubtedly require some element of explanation from your server. I have never had a problem highlighting my ignorance of some of the ingredients listed and staff have always been both helpful and friendly in explaining things to me. On top of all of this there are always 3 or 4 specials on offer as well.
You may have noticed I have a lot of time for this place and I would seriously recommend it to anyone in Bristol that enjoys Middle Eastern cuisine or wants to give it a go. Good value, bright atmosphere and great food, you will not go home disappointed.
